If anybody is wondering what to do for the summer, and would like to have a head-start at looking at some colleges, then they might want to consider applying for CTY.
What is CTY?
This program stands for Center for Talented Youth and it originated at Johns Hopkins University. This program allows students to enter in different courses (just one course for each session) while staying on a college campus for three weeks. From government to biology courses, students of all ages (k-12) can participate in CTY courses.
My personal experience at CTY was actually life-changing. I had two sessions at CTY: one in my 7th grade summer at Johns Hopkins University and another in my 8th grade summer at Loyola Marymount University. I was taught biology and chemistry by wonderful teachers while creating friendships that I still maintain today. This was also a wonderful experience toward independence as we were expected to wake up, manage our free time, eat, and sleep by ourselves. To be honest, my 7th grade summer was the first time I ever had to rely on my own alarm clock to wake up and I realized that I am more knowledgeable on household chores compared to others.
How does this help?
By applying to a summer program early on, students can potentially show their interest in colleges, but also their interest in specific topics. When writing college applications, most colleges ask if students participated in any summer programs, so a CTY session would be perfect to talk about. If not, a CTY session would still be a great part of a college resume.
