Boston University’s Research in Science and Engineering (RISE) program is another summer program available for high school students to conduct scientific research over the summer. Students spend six weeks at BU conducting university laboratory research in two separate tracks: Internship and Practicum
Internship
Students in the internship track spend 40 hours a week working on research projects designed by a mentor and students can choose from a wide range of categories including astronomy, biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, medical laboratory research, neuroscience, physics, psychology, and public health. The culmination of the program is the Poster Symposium where students present their work. Internship students join Practicum students for workshops one day per week to build academic and professional skills.

Practicum
Practicum is for students who prefer a more structured research environment and students conduct group research under the guidance of a BU instructor. Research is only focused on computational neurobiology.
Students spend two hours every day with a lecture before continuing with four hours of group research in the afternoon where students learn procedures that are representative of university laboratory research in computational neurobiology. There is a set syllabus and the results of the project are presented at the Poster Symposium. Practicum students must have access to a laptop with the capability to run programming software.
Admissions
Applications are due in mid-February each year and must include basic biographical information, essays, your high school transcript, standardized test scores, and financial aid documents. Recommendation letters are also required from two individuals.
BU RISE is one of the more competitive summer programs available for high school students with 800 applications being received in 2019 for 130 slots. The program is unique in that its application process has a matching phase. After an initial review, qualified applicants to the RISE Internship track will enter the match phase, where the application will be shared with researchers that align with your interests. Admission is only offered when a faculty member agrees to host you as an intern. The competitiveness of the program, as a result, often comes down to which field a student is applying to.
